Shrine Area

The Shrine Area houses two shrines donated to the Park and is located next to the Acre Lawn.

On May 19, 1951, A soldier named Otto Calegari, who served in WWII and then called to action to fight in Korea, as a Reservist, was killed in action. His father Rocco Calegari did a lot of masonry work for Stanley Park. The Trustees of Stanley Park were in agreement that Rocco could build a memorial in his son’s honor. Stones came from the bed of the nearby river. The Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima had two benches connected to it. These benches were through donations from the Italian Fraternal Club, Italian Fraternal Club auxiliary and the Italian Fraternal Associates. On Sunday, September 21, 1952 the Shrine was blessed during a simple ceremony led by Reverand George J. Dacey. Today the Shrine still stands on a knoll overlooking the ponds. It is still frequently visited today. Not far from this Shrine is a statue of St. Fiacre (St. Francis) who was long recognized in France as the patron saint of animals, birds and the environment.
