Asian Garden

A pathway of ancient, water worn stones will lead you through alpine conifers, rhododendron, azaleas, and flowering deciduous shrubs to a Japanese Tea House. Asian Garden peak season: Mid-May through mid-June.

The land (6 acres), where the Japanese Garden is located was donated by Ms. Catherine O’Brien. Construction of the project began in 1976. With the generous donation in 1977 from Al and Amelia Ferst, the Japanese Garden and Teahouse was completed in 1978. Both the large and small Japanese Gateways, made of hand-hewn, wooden beams and bamboo, were constructed for the two entrances to the Garden. This garden, however, housed few true Japanese plants and in 2009 it was the vision of the Park to create a new Asian Garden. Through a significant bequest made by A. Josephine and E. Herbert Burk (neighbors of the Park), fully accessible walkways connecting the upper and lower sections of the Park were installed. The Japanese Garden was rededicated in the spring as the new Asian Garden.
